Subject Information
At Hodge Hill Girls’ School we believe that every pupil is entitled to follow a broad and balanced curriculum which will meet their future needs in education, training and employment. Our curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for their future roles as employees, parents/carers and responsible members of their local community.
To ensure all pupils receive this entitlement the requirements of the National Curriculum are met. However, our curriculum extends to ensure that pupils are stimulated in their learning and supported in the achievement of the highest possible standards. By the age of 16 we expect all our leavers will have developed confidence in their own ability, pride in their achievements and those of others, and a love of learning which will continue throughout their lives.
Key Stage 3 – Year 7, 8 and 9
Pupils will study English, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Art, Design and Technology, Physical Education, Geography, History, Religious Studies, PSHCE (Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship), Drama, Music) and at least one Modern Foreign Language.
All pupils will study all National Curriculum subjects until the end of Year 9.
During the Spring Term Year 9 pupils will start to consider their GCSE options. All options will be available to all students. They will be supported carefully in this process, through curriculum evenings, subject presentations, and parental guidance.
Students will be assessed on a termly basis to monitor progress. Parents will receive two interim reports and one full report per year informing them of the progress being made by their child.
Key Stage 4 - Years 10 and 11
This is the next phase of this exciting learning journey. Pupils follow a core curriculum leading to appropriate qualifications in English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, Science (separate subjects or combined science) and Religious Studies. Everyone will also study compulsory non-examined subjects like Physical Education and PSHCE and be given Careers Education, Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG).
We offer a wide choice of optional GCSE courses including Fine Art, Art (3-dimensional design), Business Studies, Citizenship, Computer Science, Drama, French, Geography, Health and Social Care, History, Hospitality and Catering, Music, Photography, Sport Studies, Spanish and Urdu.
Students will be assessed on a termly basis to monitor progress. At the end of the academic year pupils in Years 10 will sit more formal examinations, many of which will be undertaken in the Sports Hall to start preparing them for the expectations of GCSE examinations.
Year 11 students will have the opportunity to experience two full sets of mock examinations. These take place in the November and February of Year 11. The November Mock session is followed by a Mock Exam results day which students find a valuable learning experience.

Throughout Year 10 and Year 11, students are prepared for the next stage in their education via a range of activities from Careers conventions, mock interviews, work experience, an experience day at a local college, college interviews, post 16 evenings and many more fantastic opportunities.
